Charity is recompensed only according to the kindness within it.
Fixing up the world is always an inside job.
What do we fix? That which we need.
When do we fix anything? When we are in need.
Why do we fix anything? Because our destiny is tied to the destiny of that which we repair and improve.
So it is with the food we eat, the bodies in which we live, the business in which we work, and the community in which we live.
So it is with every fellow traveler through life to whom we wish to lend a helping hand.
Nobody can come from the outside, stay outside, and make real, lasting, beneficial change.
"A ladder was standing on the ground." Prayer is the ladder that connects souls and G-dhood.
And this is the essential thing: the wholehearted awe of G‑d is the ultimate purpose of all the commandments.
You have to do something. What you choose is not the issue. Neither are all the neat little tricks and conniving.
All that really matters is that you do your job honestly and as best you can using the talents and skills with which your Creator blessed you.
As He blessed you with those talents, so He will bless you in whatever you do.
There are times when you feel the struggle is too overwhelming, that you’re getting nowhere. Because every time you surface, a relentless beast inside just pulls you back down again.
But the truth is that as long as you can awaken the light and wisdom of your soul, the beast will stay at bay.
That is simply the nature of things. Just as with physical light, it takes only a small amount of light to push away much darkness, so with the wisdom of the soul—as long as you keep it shining, the stubborn idiocy of that inner beast will leave you alone.
You have to begin with the knowledge
that there is nothing perfect in this world.
Our job is not to hunt down perfection and live within it.
It is to take whatever broken pieces we have stumbled across
and sew them together to create beauty out of a bitter world.
